In May 2024, the city began a 21-month community outreach and engagement process for the future of the Santa Monica airport site. We’re now a year into that timeline and will soon move into Phase 3B of the five-phase process.

At the community event that took place earlier this month, city staff presented three draft scenarios that showcase a wide variety of approaches to converting the Santa Monica Airport site.

These scenarios are meant to be conversations starters – not final designs – and are the culmination of community and council input the city has received through Phases 1, 2 and 3A surveys, pop-ups, community events, council and commission discussions, and public comment to date.

The project team invites anyone who was not able to attend the community event to weigh in on the parts and pieces of these draft scenarios online.

The project team is soliciting this feedback through a program called “CoMap” that allows respondents to pinpoint specific elements they like or dislike for each of the three scenarios by dropping a pin and giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down with room for a comment as well.

The three scenarios are available for review and contributions on the project website through June 22 in both English and Spanish.

The scenarios, as well as the comments received through the CoMap survey and from the May 17 event, will be brought to the City Council on July 8. At that meeting, the City Council will provide feedback and direction on the elements of the scenarios for staff to incorporate into one hybrid preferred scenario, which will then be open for an additional round of community input in the fall (Phase 3B).

Staff anticipate wrapping up all five phases of outreach and engagement by the end of 2025.

We invite you to take the CoMap survey and to bookmark smacproject.com and check back for the latest on the Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project. For more detail on each of the scenarios, please see the Event Boards under the “Learn & Engage” tab of the website.

The Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project is a multi-year planning effort for Santa Monica to create a preferred scenario for the future of the airport site once aviation operations end in 2028, centered on a great park and consistent with Measure LC.
