The city of Santa Monica is aware of planned protests across the nation and in the greater Los Angeles area, including in Santa Monica at Palisades Park, on June 14.
We know that, especially following the events of May 31, 2020, many residents and business owners in Santa Monica are worried about bad actors using the regional unrest as a cover to commit crimes and cause destruction in our city. Our community experienced similar worries as our Police Department protected homes under mandatory evacuation during the January wildfires.
Our Police Department is in touch with event organizers and will be monitoring the event closely. SMPD is upstaffing as a precaution with special attention around the area of the protest. Any criminal acts such as looting, vandalism, acts of violence or threats to public safety will not be tolerated.
The city’s various departments are also monitoring the weekend activities and will be activated as needed.
The city respects everyone’s First Amendment right to peaceful protest.  However, individuals taking advantage of the situation with criminal behavior will be subject to arrest and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Call or text 9-1-1 to report crime in progress. To report an incident that does not require an immediate police response, contact the non-emergency dispatcher at (310) 458-8491. To sign up for temporary emergency alerts in Santa Monica, text SMVISIT to 888-777 or register at santamonica.gov/alerts.
Protest participants are encouraged to model calm behavior, stay aware of their surroundings and not engage with potential agitators.
Keep it peaceful. Lose calm, lose the cause.
